Tax Law and HMRC

  • was formed in April 2005 as the department following the merger of HM Customs & Excise and the Inland Revenue
  • is responsible for the care and management of all taxes
    •  from the more commonly known ones such as VAT, Stamp Duty and Land Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Income Tax, National Insurance Contributions, Child Tax Credits, Corporation Tax
    •  the lesser well known ones such as Missing Trader Intra Community Fraud (MTIC), Air Passenger Duty, Aggregates Levy, Hydrocarbon Duties, Non Domestic Rates (Business Rates), Tobacco and Alcohol Duty .

Its remit is therefore very wide and knowing how to deal with its myriad of regulations, its notices, guidance and its people is an extremely challenging task.

An encounter with HMRC could range from a simple investigation or clarification exercise, all the way up to a lengthy and complex investigation, a penalty or full blown litigation, and as such it is very important to seek advice at an early stage.

It is also common for there to be a strict time limit for responding to a HMRC decision letters and other communications and you should therefore seek advice at the earliest opportunity.
